Do you have crooked teeth? An overbite? An underbite? Have you avoided metal braces because of self-consciousness? If so, Invisalign® may be for you. Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces that can be great for appearance-conscious adults and teens.
How Does It Work?
Invisalign works on the same basic principle as traditional braces of moving your teeth gradually into alignment. The mechanics of how it does this, however, are quite different. You will be given a series of clear plastic aligners, each one slightly closer to a perfect bite than your own teeth. Over time, your teeth will adjust to their new position. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks, and treatment typically takes around 6 to 12 months.
What to Expect
Dr. Joseph Cheung will take a series of digital images of your teeth and jaw. This replaces the more traditional bite mold. We will send these images to the Invisalign lab, who will make the first of your custom aligners. These aligners will be replaced about every two weeks. Treatment time varies from case to case. However, six months to a year is typical. At the end of your treatment, your last aligner serves as your retainer. We advise wearing a retainer to keep your results at their best.
The Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign has a lot of benefits over traditional braces:
- They are removable, so you can eat all your favorite foods and brush your teeth like normal, reducing the risk of decay that comes with metal braces
- The soft aligners are more comfortable than braces, and will not irritate the gums
- No painful adjustment appointments and gradual adjustment is less painful than braces
- The clear plastic aligners are nearly invisible
Is Invisalign Right for Me?
Invisalign is best for people with mild to moderate misalignment. We generally recommend this option for teen or adult patients who might be wary of visible braces. Invisalign can be used to treat:
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps in teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
