What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a restorative treatment. This means that they are designed to restore function to your mouth. Of course, as with any dental treatment, the goal is also to improve the appearance of your teeth. Crowns in particular are designed to address a variety of dental complaints. They are a sort of cap that covers a single tooth completely and is permanently fixed into place. This stabilizes the tooth and improves comfort, function, and esthetics.
What Do They Treat?
Crowns can be used to address both damage and cosmetics. This includes:
- Advanced cavities and decay
- Cracked and broken teeth
- Unstable tooth after a root canal
- Missing teeth, when used with a dental implant
- Crooked teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Permanent discoloration
The Process
Most dental crown procedures take place over several appointments. At your first appointment, Dr. Joseph Cheung will prepare the tooth by removing decay and stabilizing damage and shape the tooth to receive the crown. Dental impressions will be taken to be used in making the crown. After your crown has been milled from color-matched dental porcelain, Dr. Cheung will fit and cement it into place at a second appointment.
